Join us at Museum of Liverpool for International Women’s Day!

International Women's Day - roller derby
Spinderella showing how roller derby has empowered her!

We’re very excited to announce that we’ve been invited by the Museum of Liverpool to be part of their ‘Women on the Waterfront’ weekend, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

We’ll be in the beautiful atrium of the Museum on Saturday 5 March from 10am-12pm on our skates, in our uniforms and ready to talk about roller derby to whoever will listen!

We’ll also be showing our kick-ass This Girl Can video (featuring Pops #767, our ambassador from 2015) and doing some fancy footwork skills. We’re hoping to be joined by our friends from This Girl Can Liverpool too.

It’s always been a dream of ours to have something about Liverpool Roller Birds in this amazing museum, which has a vast sports section. So maybe we are getting closer to this dream by being in the museum ourselves, just for one morning!

International Women’s Day is something close to our hearts, which you might have realised from our hugely *Liked* IWD Facebook album of pics from last year.

Our Birds told the world about the changes they wanted to see, inspired by the IWD 2015 theme of ‘Make it Happen’. Many of these sentiments also fit with this year’s theme of #PledgeForParity, such as:

“Equality in the workplace”, “Pay nurses the same as train drivers” and “Gender equality benefits everyone”

We hope that being part of this year’s events will help to raise awareness of the empowerment and fun that women can experience from being part of a tough but exhilarating team sport like roller derby,  which was pioneered by women. We’ll also aim to show that, in the spirit of This Girl Can, getting sweaty is totally ok – being ‘Hot and Not Bothered’ is what we’re all about!
